Core Values
1) Tillid (trust)
Denmark is widely described as a high-trust society, and that trust is evident in everyday life and workplaces (greater autonomy, less micromanagement).
2) Lighed (equality; low status performance)
Hierarchies exist, but “acting important” is usually not admired. People often expect leaders to be approachable and teams to speak up.
3) Janteloven (don’t act superior)
Janteloven (the “Law of Jante”) is commonly referenced as a cultural idea: don’t think you’re better than others; keep yourself grounded. Even when used jokingly, it reflects a real norm around modesty and social equality.
4) Hygge (cozy togetherness)
Hygge is about creating a calm, comfortable atmosphere, often simple, low-key, and shared (candles, coffee, friends, relaxed time). It’s less “luxury” and more “ease.”
5) Fællesskab (community and cooperation)
There’s a strong expectation of doing your part and keeping things fair for the group—socially and at work. It often shows up as cooperation, consensus-seeking, and shared responsibility.
6) Work-life boundaries
Denmark actively protects personal time and balance (and it’s socially acceptable to have a life outside work).
Hall's Cross-Cultural Dimensions
Communication context: generally low-context
Danes often prefer clarity and plain speaking (meaning mostly sits in the words, not the hints). Feedback can be direct, but it’s usually meant to be efficient and honest rather than harsh.
Time: generally monochronic
Planning and punctuality are essential, particularly for work meetings and deadlines.
